Abstract

Swamp land has a very acid pH so that nutrients become unavailable to plants. Biochar and Nitrogen fertilizer can be used to overcome problem of acid pH and nutrient deficiency. The aims of this research ware to know the efficiency of N fertilizer through utilization of biochar on growth and production of rice crops in swamp land and to find out the best combination between N fertilizer and biochar on growth and production of rice plants. Research was conducted in greenhouse, Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya, South Sumatra. The study was conducted from May to August 2017. The design used in this study was Completely Randomized Design with five treatments: B0N0 (Control), B1N0 (Biochar), B1N1 (Biochar + 1 Urea dose), B1N2 (Biochar + ¾ Urea dose), B1N3 (Biochar + ½ Urea dose). The variables observed were plant height, maximum number of tillers, number of productive tillers, 100 grainsweight, percentage of filled grain, percentage of empty grain, N soil, N efficiency calculation. The results showed Nitrogen fertilizer with ½ recommended dosage (125 kg ha-1) and biochar 30 tons ha-1 were the best dosage to increase growth of rice plant in swamp land, Nitrogen fertilizer (250 kg ha-1) and 30 tons ha-1Biochar were the best combination in increase rice yield (3.40 tons ha-1) and combination of 125 kg ha-1N and 30 tons ha-1biocharwas highest in increasing nitrogen efficiency i.e. 49.49%. It recommended to carry out more research about application of more N fertilizer and other ammeliorant for rice in swamp land.
