Abstract
During the aging process, skeletal muscle performance and physiology undergoes alterations leading to decrements in functional capacity, health-span, and independence. One of the problems in aging is the progressive loss in muscle mass and function known as sarcopenia. Many studies recommend healthy older adult to do moderate intensity exercise for 30 minutes every day or several days of the week. However, in fact people's interest in exercising remains low, despite the revealed benefits of exercise for health. One of the main obstacles some people have to exercise is the lack of time. Therefore, recently researchers began to conduct innovation research on a high-intensity exercise given a pause in exercise between sets. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is an exercise that uses high energy consumption with a short time, interspersed with rest. In general, HIIT is performed in training sessions that last ≤30 minutes, including the heating and cooling stages. So HIIT exercises are considered to be a very possible exercise done by the elderly to be able to suppress the influence of sarcopenia. Recent research on HIIT, however, has had little effect on the skeletal and sarcopenia muscles. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research to analyze the effect of HIIT on skeletal muscles.
