Abstract

Obesity is an epidemic in many countries, including developing countries. Obesity has serious health effects including cardiovascular disease, pulmonary hypertension, musculoskeletal disorders, various types of cancer, and even death. The social and economic costs of obesity and its associated comorbidities are enormous and burden the health care system. Physiological processes that regulate body weight and metabolism are responsible for the course of obesity, including hunger and satiety signals originating from the periphery and integrated gastrointestinal responses influenced by gut microbiota. Microbiota play a role in the course of obesity by influencing nutrient acquisition, energy regulation, and having an important role in body weight regulation. The composition of the gut microbiota is formed in the first year of life and continues to undergo changes to the adulttype microbiota due to host and external factors, including effects of the microbiota itself, developmental changes in the gut environment, and the transition to the adult diet. The trillions of bacteria present in the human digestive tract raise the possibility that the gut microbiota has an important role in weight regulation and may be responsible for the development of obesity in some people. This article discusses the role of modifying the gut microbiota in the course of disease and the development of obesity. Keywords: obesity, gut microbiota, bacteria
