Abstract
Sediment Microbial Fuel Cells (SMFC) is a part of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC). SMFCs utilize microorganisms found in sediment to degrade organic matter and produce electrons transfers to the anode and then channeled into the catode. The purpose of this research is to determine the value and effect of concentration of organic materials in the form of acetic acid (CH3COOH) against voltage and current and Current density produced through the SMFCs network. The methods of research conducted of SMFC series, the addition of organic material CH3COOH, measurement of voltage and electric current and measurement of organic carbon in sediment. The results showed that sedimentary of Payung Island resulted in an average electrical voltage of 0,072 – 0,114 V, average electric current of 0,024 – 0,204 mA and Current average density ranged with 82,57 – 130,53 mA/m2. The maximum average voltage obtained at the addition of CH3COOH 9,6% by 0,114 V, the average electic current the maximum average of 0,204 mA with Current density of 130,53 mA/m2. Organic carbon concentration obtanined from the substrate of sediment island with the addition of CH3COOH with different concentrations ranged from 4,60 – 5,64 %. Electrical energy obtained from addition of CH3COOH different concentrations have a correlation value (r) of 0,756 with a determination (r2) of 0,5728. Keywords : Electrical energy, Acetic acid, Sediment Microbial Fuel Cells, Payung Island
