Abstract

Asphalt defined as black to dark brown cementitious material with bitumen as main component used on flexible pavement. In order to improve the quality of asphalt on avoiding the damage caused by an overload capacity, the mix of Stone Matrix Asphalt was innovated. Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) is a gap-graded hot mix asphalt contains mainly coarse aggregates, fine aggregates, and filler to form efficient structure for load distribution. In Indonesia, the study about Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) is rarely found. Up to 2018, Ministry of Public Works and Public House, Directorate General of Highways has released 2018 General Specifications as the revision of 2010 General Specifications Revision 3. The recent specification contains the explanation about SMA. It is stated that SMA is divided into three types which are thin SMA layers, fine SMA layers, and coarse SMA layers. This research was intended to describe the characteristics of mixture, comparison between the performance on the parameters of Marshall Test, and optimum asphalt content on the mixture of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) with coarse graded JBMA-50 asbuton asphalt, rubberized asphalt, and bitumen with penetration 60/70. On the study of coarse graded SMA mixes, it took overall 45 samples, with each 15 samples specified per types of asphalt on asbuton asphalt, rubberized asphalt, and bitumen with penetration 60/70, 6% content of asphalt mix design with the 0,5% content improvement which obtained from the calculation of design mix formula. The result showed that the most durable coarse graded SMA mixes is rubberized asphalt over all types with lowest value of KAO peaked on 6.55%, buton asphalt peaked on 6.7%, bitumen peaked on 6.7%. Rubberized asphalt also has the highest stability value of 1,080 kg, buton asphalt 927 kg which the design mix should have the high stability value.
