Abstract

Scabies is an infectious skin disease caused by the mite named Sarcoptes Scabiei Var Hominis. This disease is caused by a worst of environmental sanitation and poor personal hygiene. This study aims to determine the correlation between environmental sanitation and personal hygiene on the prevalence of scabies in the Social Homeless Rehabilitation Center for Beggars and People with Mental Disorders in South Sumatra Province. The research method is using quantitative with a case-control design and the sampling using simple random sampling technique. The population in this study were all residents living in the Social Rehabilitation Homeless, Beggars and People with Mental Disorders of South Sumatra Province, totaling 180 people. The sample in this study was 160 people, which consisted of 80 cases and 80 controls. Data were analyzed univariately to determine the variables that presdispose the prevalence of scabies, bivariately to determine the correalation between variables that cause scabies based on the Chi-Square test and multivariately to determine which variables is the most risk factor. The results showed that the independent variables into the dominant risk factor for the incidence of scabies were bowel movement behavior (p-value = 0.000 and OR = 56.336, the respondents who have risky bowel movement behavior will increase the risk of scabies incidents as many as 56,336 times after controlled by bathing habits (p-value = 0.119 and OR = 2.246), cleanliness of mattresses and bed linen (p-value = 0.168 and OR = 2,331) and cleanliness of clothes (p-value = 0.359 and OR = 1.995).
