Abstract
The aim of this research was to study the effect of seedling age to the early growth and adaptation of two mangroves Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophora mucronata grown in Musi River estuary of Delta Upang, Banyuasin, South Sumatra. This research used a Randomized Block Design which was arranged in factorial with two factors. First factor was type of mangrove Rhizophora apiculata (S1) and Rhizophora mucronata (S2). Second factor was seedling age 0 month (U1), 2 month (U2), 3 month (U3), and 4 month (U4). Each treatment consisted of three replications and each unit of treatment consisted of five plants. The result indicated that early growth performance and adaptation ability of mangrove plant in Musi River estuary was affected by mangrove type and seedling age. The use of old seedling would give a better performance of plants in the field, although younger seedling had higher early plant growth rate. For mangrove planting in Musi River estuary, it was recommended that Rhizophora mucronata which have better adaptation ability than Rhizophora apiculata. Keywords: Mangrove, rhizopora, adaptation, musi river estuary.
