Abstract

Adaptation of Rice Production in Fresh Water Swamp: Methods to Alleviate Negative Affect of Flooding Using Several Nitrogen Application. The experiment was carried out in the green house in randomized block design (RBD). The treatments consist of flooding period P0 (no flooding), P1 (3 days), P2 (5 day), and P3 (7 day); and N application N1 (all dosage prior planting), N2 (N1 + leaf fertilizer at 56 DAP), N3 (? dosage prior plating + ? dosage 56 DAP), N4 (N3 + leaf fertilizer at 56 DAP). The result showed that the methods of N application could strengthen agronomic characters of rice var IR 64 from the effect of flooding. N2 treatment could maintain its height and tiller number compared to other treatments until flooding treatment of P2. Moreover, the N1 and N2 treatments preserved leaf number and tiller number until P1, but then decreasing as well as the other treatments did. Flooding treatments of P2 and P3 contributed higher effect on the parameter of panicle number. Although there was a grain percentage decrease at N2P2, N1 and N2 treatments still produced higher grain compared to N3 and N4 because of its different effect to the panicle number. This experiment suggested that under the flooding condition of rice field at the period of two weeks after planting, the application of all nitrogen fertilizer dosage prior planting could maintain or even increase rice production in fresh water swamps. Key words: Rice, Flooding, Nitrogen Fertiilizer.
