Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find a formulation of the relationship of rice varieties (Oryza sativa L.) and the compound of the friction rollers and the behavior of cracks in rough rice milling process to be brown rice. One of the parameters that affect the milling process is the relationship between rice and roller friction compound that significantly affects the friction force required in the milling process. The method used in studying this formulation is to begin field surveys to conduct laboratory testing followed by engineering coefficient of friction tester. Analytical calculations and comparison experiments were also performed to find a good formulation. The data of physical properties of rice and mechanical properties and chemical data were analyzed to obtain the compound roller between the roller friction compound relationships are three varieties of rice varieties Cisadane, Ciherang and IR 42. Two types of compound rollers with different hardness and composition are treated to three types of varieties to get the value of the coefficient of friction and the compressive force. The coefficient of friction is obtained by performing the experiment of testing equipment designed. Two types of compound friction roller against the three types of rice varieties is the product between the coefficient of friction and the compressive force. The results showed that a significant relationship between mechanical and chemical properties of compound rolls and rice varieties in the formulation of the relationship of friction between rice varieties and compound rollers. Friction is influenced by the compressive force provided by the compound to the surface of the rice rolls and the coefficient of friction. While the compressive force provided influenced by the mechanical properties and composition of the compound and the chemical properties of rice rolls. The harder compound rollers then compressive force given the greater, thus affecting the yield of milled rice. Two compound rollers with hardness 92 Shore A standardized by the ISO is too hard for the variety IR 42, because the quantity of more broken than Cisadane and Ciherang. For tidal rice varieties namely varieties Cisadane, Ciherang, and IR 42 recommended milled with compound roller with 85 Shore hardness A. Patterns and behaviors for varieties Cisadane cracks that have lower levels of amylose has a more dense pattern is more compact because of the variety IR 42. Crack patterns and behavior is strongly influenced levels of lipids, protein and amylose contained in grains of rice. Keywords: Milling machines, roller compound, the coefficient of friction, compressive force, friction, the behavior of crack.
