Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of compressive strength and particles size composing charcoal briquette to characteristic of palm petiole briquettes. It was conducted from April 2015 until August 2015 at Laboratory of Mining Department and Energy Palembang. Randomize block factorial design method was used in this research with two factors consisted of A (particle size) and B (pressure). The first treatment (A) was particle size of 60 mesh, 70 mesh and 80 mesh, meanwhile the second treatment (B) was pressure of 2000 psi, 4000 psi and 6000 psi. The observed parameters were initial of ignition briquettes (minute), duration of briquettes burn to ashes (minute), water (%), ash (%), volatile matter (%), fixed carbon (%), calorific value (cal/gram), density (gram/cm3) and supporting parameter was hygroscopic substance (gram/week). The results showed that charcoal particles size and pressure affected to duration of briquettes burn to ashes and water content. The best treatment were charcoal particles size 60 mesh and pressure 6000 psi with initial of ignition briquettes (2’51”), duration of briquettes burn to ashes (84’69”), moisture (3,64 %), ash (5,64 %), volatile matter (23,79%), fixed carbon (66,93%), calorific value (6345 cal/gram), density (0,566 gram/cm3 ).
