Abstract

Mangrove has been known as an important wetland ecosystem to serve not only locally but also interconnected to the whole ecosystem. Indonesia is a country which has the most mangroves, both in terms of area and number of species. Many activities have affected the degradation of mangrove ecosystem. The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and Japan International Agency has been implementing a five-year project for restoration of ecosystem in five conservation areas including Sembilang National Park. This national park is a wetland ecosystem with a large area of mangrove that plays an important role as a temporary habitat of some migrant birds from Siberia. The mangrove ecosystem in this area has been degraded mainly because of aquaculture fish ponds. Mangrove restoration in this area has been started since October 2010. This paper presents the activity of mangrove restoration from the beginning of surveillance the area, setting the target restoration area boundary, setting mangrove restoration plan, and mangrove planting implementation. It is also discuss the future plan of activity to obtain the sustainability of this program.
