Abstract
The objective of this research was to gain knowledge about the development of business diversification and its impact on household income swampy lowland farmers through the steps (1) to describe the development of business diversification, (2) analyze the structure of household income and to determine the size and distribution of income, and (3) analyze the factors that affect the income of farm household in the swampy lowland area. Primary data collection was conducted in District of Ogan Ilir in South Sumatra to take three sample villages in the Subdistrict of South Pemulutan, namely vilage of Pematang Bangsal, Ulak Aur Standing, and Naikan Tembakang. Total sample of 90 people is about 9% of the 983 households rice farmers in three villages were selected simple random sampling. The results showed that diversification has evolved in the form of horizontal diversification, namely the development of productive economic activity branch consisting of rice farming activities as its main business, non-rice agriculture, and off-farm activities. The growing diversufication has increased labor participation of farm households but is still relatively low at 37%. The use of family labor farmers on productive economic activity occurs due to the risks and undertainties in rice farming as a result of water swampy low land condition that can not be controlled, rice farming activities are carried out once a year and income from rice farming insufficient farm households. The growing diversification per year. Farmers household income distribution indicated by the number 0.2701, meaning equalization with low inequality. From the results of the regression analysis, amount of income was positively affected by the arable land area, land productivity and labor participation, but the R-square value of 0.38. Suggested done with emphasis on the development of diversified business branches, improvement of processing and marketing of products and increased business productivity. It must alwasy be do research to find appropriate technological innovation to suit the characteristics of swampy lowland areas.
