Abstract
Quenching is one of the heat treatment techniques used to produce metals with a higher hardness level. This study aims to determine the effect of the addition of papaya leaf extract on the corrosion rate of ST 37 steel and quenching. This research is an experiment. Five specimens to be tested using a quenching process with papaya leaf extract with varying concentrations of 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and without extract. The quenching temperature is 8000C with a holding time of 45 minutes. corrosive media in the form of sulfuric acid with a soaking duration of 72 hours. After that, a weighloss test was carried out. The results of the specimen with a concentration of 100% obtained a corrosion rate of 3.440 mpy, 80% content of 2.871 mpy, 60% of 3.457 mpy, 40% of 3.330 mpy, and those without papaya leaf extract 3.727 mpy. It was concluded that there was an effect of papaya leaf extract on ST 37 steel on the corrosion rate. Where the substances contained in the papaya leaf extract are not able to prevent the mass loss that occurs but quite a bit reduce the corrosive rate.
