Abstract

Background: Periodontal disease is a dental problem that occurs in the periodontium. The main factor causing periodontal disease is the presence of bacteria in plaque. One of the bacteria that causes periodontal disease with high virulence is Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis). Catfish bone extract contains bioactive peptides which have the potential to inhibit the growth of Gram negative bacteria such as P. gingivalis. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of various concentrations of catfish (Pangasius sutchi) bone extract against P. gingivalis bacterial colonies. Materials and Methods: The material used in this study was catfish bone extract. This research is an in vitro laboratory experimental study with a pre-test only control group research design. The treatment groups consisting of catfish bone extract using concentrations of 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 100%. Cefixime as the positive control and placebo as the negative control. Results: The results of this study proved that catfish bone extract with concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60%, and 100% had antibacterial properties. The diameter of the inhibition zone of the catfish bone extract that was formed ranged from 20% concentration to the largest at 100% concentration. The colony count test in this study determined the value of the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) at a concentration of 40% because there was no bacterial growth. While at a concentration of 20% there is still bacterial growth. While the value of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was obtained at a concentration of 20%. Conclusion: Catfish bone extract can act as an antibacterial against Porphyromonas gingivalis starting from a concentration of 20% and the higher the concentration, the greater the antibacterial power.
