Abstract

Kontes Mobil Hemat Energi (KMHE) contest is an annual competition held by the National Achievement Center that aims to increase student innovation in making energy-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicle concepts. One way to save fuel is to reduce drag on the vehicle. This research aims to obtain a prototype vehicle body with the smallest possible coefficient of drag (cd) and coefficient of lift (cl) values. The design parameters in making the body used are the side airfoil profile, top airfoil profile, fender shape, rear corner of the body, and tire location. Using the Taguchi method with orthogonal array matrix L8 (25), 8 prototype vehicle body designs were made using 5 design parameters with 2 variations. Computational fluids dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted using Ansys with an inlet velocity of 30 km/h and k-epsilon turbulence modeling. CFD simulations will produce outputs like cd and cl values, vehicle turbulence phenomena, pressure and velocity distributions, and airflow streamlines around the body. The cd and cl values will be statistically calculated using the Taguchi method and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to obtain the optimal setting level and determine the significant or insignificant effect of the design parameters used on the cd and cl values. Based on the optimal level setting on cd and cl values, a streamlined and aerodynamic prototype vehicle body design will be made based on the design parameters used with a coefficient of drag of 0.08272 and a coefficient of lift of -0.09241.
