Abstract

Translation is an activity of diverting or translating from one language to another to find out the meaning of the target language. The purpose of this study is to find out the types of translation that English education students use, to find out the obstacles or problems that arise when the Google Translate application is used, and to find out what solutions or problem solving are used by English education students when they get an error caused by the google translate application. This study used a qualitative research method by analyzing the data collected in the form of document reviews on 15 English to Indonesian translation assignments, and 15 Indonesian to English translation assignments, then conducting interviews with 5th semester students of English language education at Sriwijaya University, who then presented data in the form of words and frequency tables and then make conclusions from the research results obtained. The results of the analysis of students' translation assignments found that there were two types of translation used, namely faithful translation and literal translation. Then also found two categories of errors in translation, the first is semantic errors, and the second error is syntax errors. Fifth semester students at Sriwijaya University have a solution to overcome these translation errors, namely they have to learn more about linguistics, be able to change words or sentences that have ambiguous meanings, re-read the final translation results, check the translation results more, and use translation applications as much as possible to checking the correctness of the translation results, not just focusing on one application. The researcher hopes that this research can help students who want to learn translation to learn the science of translation from this research. The researcher also hopes that every translator and student who wants to learn translation when translating text or sentences using an application or translating himself to always check the final result of the text that has been translated.
