Abstract

ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF ALOE VERA JELLY CANDY ON THE GROWTH OF Streptococcus mutans Sayidati Mutiah Dentistry Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University Abstract Background: Streptococcus mutans is a bacterium which has an important role in the process of dental caries. Aloe vera has potential as an antibacterial agent which can inhibit or kill Streptococcus mutans and can be used as a product like jelly candy. The purpose of this study was to determined antibacterial activity of aloe vera jelly candy on the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Methods: This study used an in vitro experimental laboratory. The antibacterial activity of Streptococcus mutans was determined using well diffusion method on two sample groups: aloe vera jelly candy and jelly candy without aloe vera. Zone of inhibiton were measured in milimeter using caliper to determined antibacterial activity of jelly candy. The mean zone of inhibiton was analyzed with independent T-test to assess the difference in significance between the test groups. Result: Aloe vera jelly candy could inhibit Streptococcus mutans and showed significant difference with jelly candy without aloe vera (p<0,05). Conclusion: Aloe vera jelly candy had antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans, hence the jelly candy had the potential to be used for prevention of dental caries.
