Abstract

Using natural gas in internal combustion engines is an alternative to reduce dependence on fuel oil. The composition of natural gas can vary greatly depending on the gas source, the deposit, and the gas treatment process used. Changes in the gas composition affect the physical properties, and heating values, including the treatment during the combustion process in the engine. This becomes very important when natural gas is used as a fuel to generate electricity, in this case, the Gas Engine Generator (GEG) in one of the Natural Gas Station facilities located in South Sumatra, Indonesia, PT. Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN), Pagardewa Station, In the period 2021-2022, there were several unplanned shutdown events at GEG which, based on analysis, were possibly caused by an increase in CO2 levels in GEG's fuel composition. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of changes in fuel gas composition on GEG, to optimize the reliability and availability of GEG. From the results of the analysis of the Methane Number, High Heating Value, and Low Heating Value, it was found that there was a discrepancy in the ignition timing parameters on the engine, which has the potential to cause knocking, and coupled with very short fluctuations in the composition of CO2 and CH4, can cause changes in the heating value. These fluctuations can disrupt the combustion system and cause unplanned shutdowns on GEG.
