Abstract

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) can not be directly discharged into the environment. Acid mine water has a pH of 2-5 and heavy metals such as, iron and manganese which can disrupt aquatic biota. Therefore, it is needed a treatment before acid mine water to be discharged into the environment. One alternative way is using a membrane. A couple of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis equipped with rice husk-ash as an adsorbent was used in the current work. Parameters analyzed in this study were Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), pH, and iron, manganese. To investigate the effect of pH of AMD on permeate quality, a synthetic acid mine drainage was prepared with three variations of pH, ie 2.4; 3.74; and 3.9. The results showed that AMD treatment using a coupled of Ultrafiltration and Reverse Osmosis is able to decrease the TDS, Fe, and Mn up to 99.68%, 98.06%, and 99.58%, respectively, and also capable to raise the pH of permeates up to 125%.
