Abstract
Indonesian mining activities have been increased along with the potential impact of acid mine drainage on the environment. For this reason, acid mine drainage needs to be treated prior discharged safely into the environment. In the current work, the coupled of Sand Filter Ultrafiltrtion and Reverse Osmosis were used for synthetics acid mine drainage treatment with pH of 2.4; 3.74; and 3.93 respectively. The parameters measured were pH, EC, TDS, sulfate, iron, and manganese. The results shown that the Sand Filter Ultrafiltrtion and Reverse Osmosis units can increase the pH by 12, 20, and 125 % respectively. It also found the decrease of TDS and EC up to 90 %; the reduction of sulfate, iron, and manganese by 98, 96.5, and 90 % respectively. The permeates have the good quality and met the environmental standard. Nevertheless, the system only increases the permeate acidity to 5.4 when the acid mine has a pH of 2.4 thus it suggested to enhance the operating time greater than one hour.
