Abstract

Mangroves are one of the coastal ecosystems that affect the fertility of the surrounding waters. through its role as an exporter of organic matter for waters. Among several species or mangrove communities that are common in the Banyuasin Estuary area of South Sumatra are Api-api (Avicennia sp) and Nipah (Nypa fruticans). The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the content of organic matter in sediments and water between the Api-api and Nipah communities. This research was carried out in the Banyuasin Muara mangrove area, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. Sampling of water and sediment was carried out at 6 observation stations. Stations 1,2,3 are located in the Api-api community area and stations 4,5,6 are in the Nipah community area. Analysis of organic matter content in water using the Oxido Permanganometric method, as well as for sediments using the ashing method. The total organic matter content in the water column and sediment is generally high for stations located in the Api-apl community and lower for the nipah community. The results of measuring the organic matter content in the water column were the highest at station 1 (49.789 mg/L) in the Api-api community area and the lowest at station 6 (38.682 mg/L) in the Nipah community. As with the water column, the results of measuring the average total organic matter content in sediments show that it is generally high for stations located in the Api-apl community and lower for the Nipah community, where the highest content is found at station 1 (7.100%) and lowest at station 4 (6.400%).
