Abstract

Different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been applied to remove the organic content of winery wastewater. The considered AOPs were: TiO2-photocataysis (UV/TiO2), photolysis (UV), ozonation (O3), and ozonation with UV-A light irradiation (UV/O3). The application of selected AOPs all resulted in a considerable decrease in Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content with different treatment efficiencies depending on the type of the applied AOPs. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study was used as a tool to compare the different AOPs in terms of their environmental impact. All the AOPs considered are more energy intensive than material intensive processes and consequently the energy consumption is the stage that generates the main environmental impact. For the studied AOPs, LCA has indicated that the environmental impact was attributable to the high electrical energy (power) consumption necessary to run a UV-A lamp or to produce ozone. Photolysis ozonation process was proven to have the lowest environmental impact accompanied with a high TOC removal. On the other hand, TiO2-photocataysis process appeared to be the worst AOP both in terms of TOC removal and environmental impact.
