Abstract

The habit of eating healthy snacks is still not understood by children, so children like to consume snacks in the school environment whose quality is still unknown. Personal hygiene such as good habits of washing hands and keeping nails clean can reduce the incidence of. The research objective was to determine the relationship between snack food consumption behavior and personal hygiene with the incidence of diarrhea in elementary school children in Muara Burnai II Village. This research is quantitative with the Cross Sectional method with data collection techniques through questionnaires and observation. The total population is 177. The sample in this study is 118 respondents who are determined by the hypothesis test formula of two proportions. The data obtained was analyzed using the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression. The results of the bivariate analysis found that there was a significant relationship between the frequency of snack food consumption, the choice of snack foods, the habit of washing hands, and cleanliness of nails with the incidence of diarrhea, while the habit of carrying lunch had no significant relationship with the incidence of diarrhea in elementary school children in Muara Burnai II Village. The results of the multivariate analysis showed that the choice of snack foods was the most dominant variable influencing the incidence of diarrhea in elementary school children with p-value = 0.030 ; PR=29,291 ; CI=1,393-615,854 after being controlled with variable frequency of snack food consumption, hand washing habits, and hygiene.The conclusion of the study, the most dominant factor associated with the incidence of diarrhea is the selection of snacks which are controlled by the frequency of consumption of snacks, hand washing habits and nail hygiene.
