Abstract
The objective of this research was to comprehend the development of storage pest rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) in response to various light colors. The research was conducted from September to November 2017 in the Insectarium of Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University The experimental research was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisted of 6 treatments and 3 replicates, with rice weevil S. oryzae as trial insects. The results showed that S. oryzae highly preferred dark light. The no color treatment caused surface appearance of the weevil imagoes up to 28.33 imagoes, 34.00 imagoes of second generation of the weevil, 14.67 larvae, 14.33 pupae, and 26.67 imagoes. Damages caused by rice weevil reached 21.5%, while grain weight reduction caused by the weevil reached 42.94%. Red light was the most preferred colored light, among other various colors, becausered color emitted light close to dark light. S. oryzae was less interested in bright color light such as white, green and blue lights. Light (dark and bright conditions) highly affected the behavior of insects, especially for their feeding and copulation activities.
