Abstract

Kabau root has antidiabetic activity. The results of the chemical examination showed that the kabau root contained triterpenoid, flavonoid, saponin, tannin, and phenolic compounds. The safety of using kabau root as a natural medicinal preparation must be supported by scientific research on toxicity testing. In this study an acute toxicity test for the ethanol extract of kabau root (Archidendron bubalinum) was performed on female white rats of the wistar strain using the acute toxic class method. Kabau root ethanol extract was obtained by maceration using ethanol 70%. The initial dose chosen for the main test is determined from the results obtained in the preliminary test. Based on the preliminary test, a dose of 5000 mg/kgBM was determined as the initial dose for the main test. In the main test the test animals were divided into 2 groups namely the normal control group and the 5000 mg/kgBW dose group, each group used 3 rats. The results of observations in the main test showed that there were death in all three test animals. The range of toxic doses of kabau root ethanol extract which causes acute toxicity is 5000 mg/kgBWand classified to light toxicity. Kabau root ethanol extract at a dose of 5000 mg/kgBW caused a reduction in the size of the liver, kidneys, and heart of test animals. The average levels of biochemical parameters of the normal control group were SGOT 117,886±11,045 U/L, SGPT 91,076±10,639 U/L, creatinine 0.738±0.093 mg/dL, and ureum 18.99±1.699 mg/dL. While the dose group of 5000 mg/kgBW increased after treatment, with final levels of SGOT 229.44±20.935 U/L, SGPT 127.553±4.907 U/L, creatinine 1.346±0.101 mg/dL, and urea of 35.103±1.884 mg/dL.
