Abstract

Petai’s peels (Parcia speciosa Hassk.) is a medicinal plant that used as traditional medicine. Petai’s peels contains some secondary metabolites which have potency to immunomodulatory agent. The results of thin layer chromatography test showed positive reaction to flavonoid compounds. Flavonoid has ability to stimulate specific and nonspecific immune responses. This study aims to determine the immunomodulatory effects ethanol extract of Vernonia leaves against white rats induced Salmonella thypimurium. Immunity parameters measured were the number of CD4 T cells, leukocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, macroscopic of spleen and histopathology of spleen. White rats were divided into six treatment groups, namely normal (0,5 mL/kgBW tween 80), negative control (0,5 mL/kgBW tween 80), positive control (Stimuno®), and the extract groups with a therapeutic dose 200 mg/kgBW, 400 mg/kgBW, and 800 mg/kgBW. Salmonella thypimurium was injected in all treatment groups except the normal. It was injected intraperitoneally on day 8 with a dose 0.5 mL x 105 CFU/mL. Tested groups showed an increase the number of CD4 , leukocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils and decrease the number of lymphocytes were significantly (p<0,05). It summarized the higher value exctract ethanol petai peel dose would cause higher value of CD4, leukocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils and the lower value of lymphocytes. Ethanol extract Petai peel at a dose of 800 mg/kgBW can cause hyperplasia or hypertrophy of the spleen. Ethanol extract Petai peel at a dose of 200 mg/kgBW can reduce the value of necrosis of the spleen.
