Abstract
Spodoptera litura is one of important pest insects on chilli causing damage up to 20% and able to cause the death of the infested crop in the nursery. Many entomopathogenic fungi have been used to control the insect, such as Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium spp. Entomopathogenic fungi are able to kill insects because their conidia germinate and infect insect integument, and then produce toxin which might kill the insect even faster. Therefore, this research was aimed at: 1) determining the culture filtrate of isolates B. bassiana toxicity against S. litura larvae, 2) determining the culture filtrate of isolates Metarhizium spp. toxicity against S. litura larvae. The research was conducted in the Laboratory of Entomology, Department of Plant Pest and Disease, Faculty of Agriculture Sriwijaya Unversity from May to November 2018. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 52 treatments consisted of 29 isolate of B. bassiana and 23 isolate of Metarhizium spp. applied on 25 second instar of S. litura per replicate. The results showed that the highest mortality of S. litura larvae was found in the treatment of isolate B. bassiana code BSwTd2 which was significantly different from those of other treatments. The shortest LT50 was 5.92 days and was also different from those of other treatments. The body weight of the larvae (2.04 g) was lower than those of other treatments with leaf area consumed was 64.32 cm2. The highest mortality of S. litura larvae was found on chilli leaves applied with isolate Metarhizium spp. code MKbTp2 and was significantly different from those of other treatments. The LT50 of the larvae was the shortest (7.36 days) and was different from other treatments. The body weight of the larvae (1.22 g) was lower than those of other treatments with leaf area consumed was 36.22 cm2. The symptom of poisoned insect started with inactive movement, dull integument, discoloration and shrinking. Then, the wrinkled, dry and black dead. The dead insect was found 2 x 24 hours after application, and increased until reached the peak of mortality on the 12th day. Based on the research results, It can be concluded that culture filtrate of isolates B. bassiana code BSwTd2 and Metarhizium spp. code MKbTp2 are the most effective isolates in controlling S. litura.
