Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui ukuran kotak semai yang baik untuk pertumbuhan bibit kelapa sawit {Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) di pembibitan awal. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di laboratorium Pemuliaan Tanaman Jurusan Budidaya Pertanian Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Sriwijaya Indralaya, dimulai dari bulan Maret sampai dengan Juni 2009. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan acak kelompok (RAK) dengan tiga perlakuan dan lima ulangan. Unit penelitian terdiri dari empat tanaman pada setiap ulangan perlakuan. Analisa data yang digunakan untuk parameter tinggi tanaman, jumlah daun, diameter batang dan total luas daun menggunakan analisis regresi, sedangkan analisa data untuk parameter berat basah akar menggunakan analisis keragaman sesuai rancangan yang digunakan. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan kotak semai ukuran 12 x 12 x 10 cm (P3), memiliki jumlah daun yang tertinggi tetapi memiliki total luas daun yang rendah. Perlakuan kotak semai ukuran 8 x 8 x 10 cm (Pl), memberikan pertumbuhan yang terbaik dari semua parameter yang diamati. Penggunaan kotak semai (nursery tray) belum dapat disarankan karena perakaran bibit kelapa sawit yang masih sedikit dan halus selama di pembibitan awal tidak kuat untuk menahan dan mengikat tanah pada saat pemindahan ke pembibitan utama.
