Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efek xenia pada persilangan antara jagung Surya dengan Srikandi Putih terhadap karakter biji. Efek xenia adalah dapat diartikan sebagai efek polen dari tetua jantan dari persilangan jantan dengan betina yang berkembang pada biji. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Kebun Percobaan Jurusan Budidaya Pertanian Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Sriwijaya Inderalaya. Pelaksanaannya pada bulan November 2006 sampai dengan bulan Maret 2007. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) dengan menggunakan 2 varietas jagung sebagai bahan uji yaitu varietas jagung Surya dan varietas jagung Srikandi Putih.. Terdapat empat perlakuan persilangan yang di ulang sebanyak tiga kali sehingga di dapat 12 unit perlakuan. Setiap perlakuan terdiri dari 10 sampel tanaman. Peubah yang diamati dalam penelitian ini meliputi panjang tongkol, diameter tongkol, berat tongkol, jumlah biji, berat biji kering per tanaman, berat 100 biji, kadar protein, karakter biji, produksi pipilan biji kering. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa efek xenia berpengaruh terhadap kadar protein, warna biji, dan bentuk biji tetapi tidak berpengaruh terhadap karakter biji lainnya. Polen jagung Surya memberikan efek kadar protein yang lebih besar dibandingkan dengan polen Srikandi Putih.
