Abstract

Corrosion under insulation is a main problem considering that insulated carbon steel is widely used in the energy and shipping industries. Dimensional limitations require the process of joining materials, one of which is welding which can produce residual stress. One way to improve welding quality and corrosion resistance is with post weld heat treatment (PWHT). This study aims to determine the effect of PWHT quenching ASTM A36 steel on corrosion under insulation by the immersion method using pH 3.0 swamp water for 7 and 14 days. Welding is done with shield metal arc welding (SMAW). PWHT is applied at a temperature of 880°C with a 60 minutes holding time then quenched in swamp water media. The tests carried out are dye penetrant on welding results, brinell hardness tests, corrosion rate calculations, charpy impact tests, and metallographic observations. The results showed that PWHT quenching increases hardness, toughness, and effectively reduces the corrosion rate value both insulated and uninsulated compared to as received and as weld specimen. Uninsulated corrosion rate was inhibited on the 14th day due to the formation of an oxide layer, while the insulated corrosion rate 14th days has an increased because water has entered the insulation. Q14 specimens showed the most significant reduction in corrosion rate compared to other specimens, while Q14+ specimens experienced slower corrosion rates than welded specimens. Metallographic observations showed that the phase formed in as received and as weld specimen was ferrite and pearlite, and in quenching specimen was bainite because the carbon content in the specimen was not enough to form martensite.
