Abstract

Complaints of skin disorders in the communities around the Tanjung Raja river are still quite high. The reason is suspected because basic sanitation does not meet the requirements and characteristics of individuals who still use river water as a source of clean water. The study aims to determine the quality of river water and individual characteristics and complaints of skin disorders in the community around the river. The research is quantitative using the cross sectional method. The study was conducted in the area around the Tanjung Raja river water with a population of 79 people and 2 samples of river water (upstream and downstream). The variables measured were physical and chemical quality of river water, individual characteristics (gender, age, education, work status), and complaints of skin disorders. The results show that the physical and chemical variables of river water are above the PP standard. No.82 of 2001 for physical parameters of turbidity (upstream = 95.10 NTU, downstream = 96.07 NTU) exceeding the quality standard namely 5 NTU, chemical parameters of BOD (upstream = 16, downstream = 19) exceeding the quality standard namely 2 mg / l and COD (upstream = 25.11, downstream 29.70) exceeds the quality standard of 10 mg / l. this is in line with the high complaints of skin disorders by 64.5% (hives, freckles, blistered skin, discoloration, and berikik). Based on individual characteristics it was shown that there was a relationship between sexes (p = 0.002), Education (p = 0.007), and employment status (p = 0.000) with complaints of skin disorders. Based on this research, the water quality of the Tanjung Raja River is low, and the concern of the community around the river is poor for clean water sources. It is recommended that the community build a clean culture, and increase the role of health workers in providing information or counseling in the riverbank area.
