Abstract

The textile industry produces a lot of dye waste in liquid form. One of the pollutants in dye waste is rhodamine B, included in carcinogenic dyes and dangerous when exposed to living things. Method that can be used to overcome this problem is the adsorption method using activated carbon. Preparation of activated carbon from rubber fruit shells (Hevea brasiliensis) which was activated using H3PO4 10%. Activated carbon is modified with Zn(OH)2 using sonication assistance to produce an Zn(OH)2 – activated carbon composite. It was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis and the result was that the activated carbon in the composite was amorphous while the Zn(OH)2 in the composite was in the form of crystals. The pH Point Zero Change (PZC) on the Zn(OH)2 – activated carbon composite obtained pH of 7.8. Optimum conditions determination of the adsorption process of a Zn(OH)2 – activated carbon on rhodamine B using variations in adsorbent mass, adsorbate concentration, and contact time using sonicated conditions. The optimum conditions for the adsorption process of Zn(OH)2 – activated carbon on rhodamine B were obtained at an adsorbent mass of 0.075 gram, an adsorbate concentration of 50 mg/L and a contact time of 10 minutes which resulted in an adsorbed concentration of 46.678 mg/L. The adsorption kinetics model of Zn(OH)2 – activated carbon on rhodamine B satisfies the pseudo second order equation, and the adsorption isotherm models follow the Freundlich equation.
