Abstract

Statistical data ILO found that most workers' deaths were caused by work-related diseases. Deaths due to hazardous substances are known to number 651,279 people per year. In industrial development activities the use of chemicals is difficult to avoid. This study aims to assess the health risks due to sodium hydroxide to workers in the petrochemical company factory area. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The method used is the Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA) introduced by DOSH (Department of Occupational Health and Safety) Malaysia. This health risk assessment assesses sodium hydroxide exposure through two routes, the inhalation route and the dermal route. The total informants in this study were 4 people. The results of this study indicate that the Hazard Rating (HR) of Sodium Hydroxide is 5, the exposure rating (ER) of workers in 3 area units of company is 3, the Risk Rating (RR) of workers is in high risk category , Classification of dermal exposure to workers classified as corrosion and acute toxicity. Frequency, and intensity of dermal exposure to workers is long term and large extent of contact category, and risk rating of dermal exposure high risk category. Control measures fall into adequate category, and priority action is needed to control Action Priority-3.
