Abstract

Clayey soil is characterized by its low bearing capacity and high compressibility, necessitating the implementation of soil improvement techniques. One such method used to expedite consolidation is the combination of the Vacuum Consolidation Method (VCM) with Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD), which has been successfully applied in the Palembang-Indralaya Toll Road project. This study follows a descriptive quantitative approach, employing laboratory modeling tests to collect data. The modeling process involved using a concrete testbed with dimensions of (6×1×1) m, applying a vacuum pump pressure of approximately ± 8 kPa, and employing monitoring instruments such as piezometers, dial gauges, and vacuum gauges. The vacuum consolidation process was conducted on a 90 cm thick layer of clayey soil within the test bed, spanning a duration of 92 hours. This process resulted in a settlement of 13.64 mm and a final pore water pressure of 2.389 kPa. Consolidation tests were carried out to analyze the soil's consolidation parameters before and after the implementation of the vacuum consolidation method. The test results demonstrated a decrease in the compression index (Cc) and an increase in the coefficient of consolidation (Cv) after the application of the vacuum consolidation method. After the vacuum consolidation, post-testing involved soil sampling at distances of 5 cm and 10 cm from the PVD, andat depths of 20 cm, 50 cm, and 80 cm below the ground surface. The results from the post-vacuum consolidation testing indicated that the compression index (Cc) decreased as the proximity to the PVD increased, while the coefficient of consolidation (Cv) exhibited an upward trend. Additionally, at greater depths, the compression index (Cc) tended to decrease, while the coefficient of consolidation (Cv) tended to increase.
