Abstract

Rare Earth Elements (REE) are a group of 17 elementsthat are rarely found in nature. Minerals that contain REE mostly are found as a product of tin mining activities. Currently, the industrial world need REE for cutting-edge and high-tech manufacturing, but the material is very rare. Geologically, Indonesia is located on a route called the Southeast Asian Tin Belt which stretches from the southern part of China, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia to Indonesia (Bangka-Belitung). The potential of REE in Bangka-Belitung is very abundantand is aproduct of tin mining activities.This research is intended as a preliminary study to obtain a general description of the presence of rare earth elements in TK 1.818 mining front of PT Timah Tbk., Pemali district, Bangka regency. However, this study is not conclude the results as a whole because it does not refer to the work plan which covers the area of Bangka and Belitung ore deposits, both primary and secondary deposits. The methods of identify process are sampling, sample preparations, grain counting analysis with binocular microscope and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The results of Grain Counting Analysis showed the minerals with an average content of monazite 0.029%, xenotim 0.01%, zircon 0.01%, and ilmenite 0.09%. The data of X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) PANalytical Epsilon 3 showed the elements of Neodymium (Nd), Yttrium (Y), and Ytterbium (Yb). The results of Grain Counting and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis with different content results are due to the incomplete mineral liberation in Grain Counting analysis.Therefore, a most precise analysis is X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF).
