Abstract

Soft clay soil is kind of cohesive soils that mostly composed by very small grains such as clay or silt that may lead to failure in building of construction on it. The main of problems of soft clay is generally caused by small shear force, low soil permeability, high compressive properties, and requires a long consolidation settlement. Therefore, main issues of above is required ground improvement techniques to speed up the land subsidence. One of the ground improvement techniques is vertical drain. This reasearch uses coconut fibers as a material for vertical drain with gauze as filter. This modeling is done in a laboratory which aims to determine the effect of the use of coconut fiber material using gauze filter as vertical drain material to the settlement of soft clay soil. As well as, to compare the time of consolidation settlement soft clay soil using coconut fiber material and gauze as filter for vertical drain and consolidation settlement soft clay soil without the use of a vertical drain. Diameter vertical drain material used was 2.5 cm with a network pattern rectangles. The loading given there are 3 stages: 250 kg / m2, 500 kg / m2, and 750 kg / m2. From these studies obtained coefficient of vertical consolidation and a settlement based on the degree of consolidation. The results of these studies indicate Cv values using vertical drain three times greater than the value Cv without using vertical drain. Cv value using vertical drain is equal to 9.35 x / (T3 cm2 / sec and value Cv without using vertical drainage was 3.05 x 1 O'3cm2 / sec.
