Abstract
Optimization of free fatty acid esterification of used cooking oil by using montmorillonite carbon monoxide composite catalyst has been performed. The montmorillonite carbon sulfonate catalyst having a surface area such that the sulphonate group thus has a higher acidity than the sulfuric acid catalyst. This research was conducted by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with three independent variables such as temperature, number of catalyst, time and response variable in percent conversion, density and viscosity. Determination of optimum conditions using Matlab R2015a and statistical analysis using Minitab16. The results showed that the optimum condition occurred at the use of reaction temperature 80oC, the amount of catalyst 3.7 gram for 120 minutes. The result of conversion of esterification from cooking oil with montmorillonite carbon sulphonate catalyst was obtained 84,75% higher than conversion using palm oil with catalyst TiO / montmorilonite equal to 74,02%. Validation results indicate that the catalyst and the model obtained are feasible to predict the percent conversion of biodiesel. The identification of ester compounds using FT-IR shows the presence of ester groups.
