Abstract

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is a commodity that has high economic value and provides many benefits. Besides having a high carbohydrate content it also contains various nutrients that are useful for the health of the body so that it is possible to serve as the main source of rice substitute or as an alternative food. This study aims to determine the effect of the weight of tuber and the type of mulch on the growth of purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L). This research was conducted at the Shade House of the Department of Agronomy and Seed Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, located in Indralaya. The research was carried out from November 2022 to January 2023. The method used in this study was a Factorial Randomized Block Design (FRBD) consisting of 2 (two) factors and 3 repetitions. The first factor was the type of mulch which consisted of 2 treatments, namely M1 = Plastic Mulch and M2 = Straw Mulch. The second factor was the weight of tuber which consisted of 3 treatment levels, namely B1 = 21-40 g of tuber weight, B2 = 41-60 g of tuber weight, and B3 = 61-80 g of tuber weight. So there were 6 treatment combinations. Each treatment was repeated 3 times resulted in total of 18 treatments. The parameters observed in this study were the number of shoots, shoot length, shoot diameter, shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root fresh weight, and root dry weight. The results showed that the smallest tuber cutting weight (21-40 g) and the type of plastic mulch gave the best results for the growth of purple sweet potato. It is proven that this treatment has the highest average value for all parameters observed.
