Abstract

Awareness about the greenhouse effect and climate change caused by greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels is increasing. This has fuelled research and development of renewable energy as a cleaner and more sustainable alternative. The energy transition is a concept that involves shifting from an energy system based on finite fossil resources with negative environmental impacts to one that is renewable, sustainable and low in carbon emissions. The Indonesian government has taken steps to facilitate the energy transition by issuing policies to increase the proportion of renewable energy in the national energy mix and encourage investment in renewable energy. This research aims to explain the factors that encourage Indonesia to implement the energy transition to new renewable energy. The theory used in this research is Richard Carlton Snyder's Decision Making Theory. The research method used in this research is the qualitative method. The results showed that the Indonesian government accelerated decision-making in making the energy transition to new renewable energy motivated by two factors, external factors and internal factors. External factors are Indonesia's ratification and commitment to the Paris Agreement, Indonesia's commitment to the Net Zero Emission target, and Indonesia's cooperation with the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). Meanwhile, internal factors include the potential fossil energy crisis in Indonesia, domestic politics in Indonesia, and Indonesia's geographical position in the energy transition.
