Abstract

Pneumonia is a health problem which is the main cause of death from infectious diseases, especially in toddlers. Pasir Putih Public Health center is the most public health center with the highest Pneumonia disease in toddlers in Pangkalpinang. The study aimed to determine the factors related to the incidence of pneumonia in toddlers in Pasir Putih Public Health Center, Pangkalpinang City. The study used a case-control design with a ratio of 1:1 and a total sample of 64 cases and 64 controls using purposive sampling. Data analysis was performed using univariate, bivariate analysis using the chi-square test, and multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression tests. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was an association between exclusive breastfeeding (p=0,008 OR=3,428), humidity (p=0,000 OR=11,057), overcrowding (p=0,000 OR=6,538), ventilation area(p=0,005 OR=3,977), natural lighting (p=0,000 OR=13,444), exposure to cigarette smoke at home (p=0,002 OR=3,571), and mother's education (p=0,002 OR=3,941) with the incidence of pneumonia in toddlers in Pasir Putih Public Health Center. The result of multivariate analysis is the most dominant variable for the incidence of pneumonia in toddlers in Pasir Putih Public Health Center, Pangkalpinang City, is humidity (OR=10,565 95% Cl: 3,160-35,320) after being controlled by the variables of exclusive breastfeeding, overcrowding, ventilation area, natural lighting, and mother's education. The community is urged to pay attention to house sanitation, open windows every day, and use transparent roofs so that light can enter to maintain air exchange and humidity.
