Abstract

Biofouling is formed due to the accumulation of microorganisms, plants and animals attached to the surface of the substrate submerged in seawater. Compounds that have potential as antifouling are alkaloids, phenolics, steroids and terpenoids. Fouling organisms such as barnacles and clams are known to be the dominant organisms causing biofouling. This research was conducted to examine the effect of mangrove leaf extract of S. caseolaris (L.) Engl. as a natural antifouling agent mixed with wood paint on a substrate in the form of wooden plates, this material was chosen because most of the boats used by the community are made of wood which is also the substrate for biofouling to stick to. The method used in this research is experimental method. The design of this study used a completely randomized design (CRD). For comparison of area and biomass macrofouling will be analyzed using the Anova test with a 95% level of confidence and followed by Duncan's test. Based on the research that has been done, the results of S. caseolaris (L.) Engl. positive for containing alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins. The lowest average percentage of attachment area and macrofouling biomass was 42% and 3.17 g at an extract concentration of 2000 ppm. S. caseolaris (L.) Engl. leaf extract potential as antifouling by reducing the average percentage of the area of macrofouling attachment after 4 weeks of immersion of the test plate by 62.7%, 57.1%, 53.1%, 48.7% and 42% respectively and by reducing biomass by 17.75 g, 11.47 g, 8.09 g, 5.92 g and 3.17 g at concentrations of 0 ppm, 500 ppm, 1000 ppm, 1500 ppm and 2000 ppm. The type of macrofouling attached to the test plate is Balanus amphitrite.
