Abstract

The changes in lifestyle that occur in DM patients such as diet, exercise and the need to control blood sugar can cause anxiety. The anxiety in DM patients will make the patient's condition worse and can trigger complications. One of the effort to deal with anxiety nonpharmacologically is by giving Benson relaxation therapy and five-finger hypnosis. Benson relaxation therapy and five-finger hypnosis are useful for providing a sense of calm, relaxation and reducing anxiety. The objective of this study is to reveal the differences in the effectiveness of Benson relaxation therapy and five-finger hypnosis on anxiety among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study was a quasi-experimental quantitative study with four groups pre-post test design. A sample os 60 respondents was taken using a purposive sampling method. The Zung Self Rating Anxiety Scale wa used fot he data collection. The results of this study revealed that there was no difference in the effectiveness of Benson relaxation therapy and five-finger hypnosis on the anxiety of type 2 DM patients with a p value = 0,446 or p value >0,05. In average, the anxiety in the Benson relaxation group was slightly lower (14,5) than the five-finger hypnosis group (16,5), indicating that although in general both therapies were equally effective in reducing anxiety levels ,the average number of Benson relaxation therapy was more effective than five finger hypnosis. Benson relaxation therapy can be an alternative that is prioritized to overcome the anxiety of DM patients.
