Abstract

At this time there are many people with diabetes mellitus who experience complications, but it is not yet known to what extent the level of adherence to self-care management has been implemented and how it relates to the level of disease perception and self-motivation in people with diabetes mellitus. This study aims to determine the relationship between perception of disease and self-motivation and the level of adherence to self-care management in people with diabetes mellitus. This type of research is non-experimental quantitative research with a correlational design. The sample used was 76 people by means of non-probability sampling using the purposive sampling technique. Bivariate test results using the Spearman rank test on disease perception with self-care management adherence levels obtained a p-value of 0.000 and r = 0.405, which means there is a fairly strong relationship between disease perception and self-care management adherence in people with diabetes mellitus. On motivation, self-care management compliance levels obtained a p-value of 0.000 and r = 0.559, which means there is a strong relationship between self-motivation and self-care management compliance levels in people with diabetes mellitus. The results of this study indicate that the majority of respondents who have good disease perceptions and high self-motivation adhere to the implementation of self-care management. Based on the research results, in increasing compliance with self-care management in people with diabetes mellitus, the role of health workers is needed to provide understanding and encouragement in increasing the perception of the disease and self-motivation in people with diabetes mellitus.
