Abstract

Surface roughness is one of the parameters in determining the geometric precise of a machining process, including drilling. Surface roughness is affected by cutting parameters. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of cutting speed and feed on the surface roughness R_a and tool wear V_B, and further to obtain a mathematical equation that allows to get R_a prediction. In this study, a CNC TU-3A machine was used and aluminium 6061 as the workpiece using HSS twist drill and MQL method with sunflower oil. The study result showed that the lowest R_a 0.72 µm and V_B 0.0386 mm were obtained under the cutting condition with V_C of 22.5 m/min and F_Z of 0.04172 mm/tooth. On the other hand, the highest R_a 1.678 µm and V_B 0.1298 mm were obtained under the cutting condition with V_C of 22.5 m/min and F_Z of 0.09828 mm/tooth. The ANOVA analysis showed that V_C had a negative influence on R_a while F_Z had a positive influence on R_a. The mathematical equation for quadratic modelling is y=1.09-0.1060x_1+0.3265x_2-0.0050x_1 x_2-0.0024x_1^2+0.0373x_2^2. Through the Mean Square Error Method, it is obtained that quadratic modelling has a lower error percentage than the linear model, which is 0.01408%.
