Abstract

In the learning process, students are required to understand the material well. In fact, students do not always fully absorb information, especially in biology material which contains many scientific concepts. So that there is an incompatibility of understanding the concept. One way that is used to detect alternative conceptions is a diagnostic test. The purpose of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of the three-tier diagnostic test instrument used to detect students' understanding of the excretory system material. This research is a development research using the Treagust (1988) method. Data collection techniques in this study used documentation, interviews, and tests. The results of this study obtained a theoretical validity value of 1 and an empirical validity value above the rtable value which indicates that this instrument is said to be valid. In addition, this instrument obtains a reliability value of 0.824 which is declared reliable. Based on the analysis of the results of the study, it was found that the 20 items at the first level consisted of 25% easy questions, 55% moderate questions, 15% difficult questions and 5% very difficult questions. The 20 items on the second level consist of 20% moderate questions, 55% difficult and 25% very difficult. In addition, from the results of the study it can be seen that most students in class XI IPA from high schools in Kab. OKU Timur experienced misconceptions with the highest misconception of 70.465% in the initial understanding sub-material of the excretory system. Students are included in the category of not understanding the concept of 18.1175% and understanding the concept of 22.56% in the skin organ sub-material.
