Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) method on the ability to understand fable text in the 7th graders of SMP Negeri Megang Sakti. The method used was a quasi-experimental. The sample of this study consisted of two classes; VII.1 as the experimental class which amounted to 39 students with the treatment of DRTA learning method, and VII.2 as the control class which amounted to 39 students by using conventional learning method commonly used by teacher. Techniques of collecting data was test and data processing used t-test calculation with SPSS 23 program. The result indicated that there was a difference of test results between the experimental and control classes. The mean value of the pre-test of understanding the fable text in the experimental class was 66.62 and the control class was 65.49. The mean value of the post-test of understanding the text in the experimental class was 80.12 and the control class was 76.64. This showed that there was a significant increase in the ability to understand the fable text on the 7th graders of SMP Negeri Megang Sakti. The result of t-test showed t-obtained> t-table = 2,225> 1,992 with df = 76 at the significance level of 95% ( = 0.05) .Because t-obtained was higher than ttable, then Ho was rejected. Therefore, Ha stating that there was a different ability to understand fable text between students taught using the DRTA method and students taught using conventional method could be accepted. As Ha has received, it can be concluded that the DRTA learning method has an influence on the ability to understand the fable text in the 7th graders of SMP Negeri Megang Sakti.
