Abstract

Sandwich panels are designed to meet the needs that require a strong material yet lightweight. The use of the core aims to prevent the skin from changing its shape. In this study, the author used a hollow square shape as the core. Therefore, this research aims to find a suitable material for dampening forces. Three types of simulation tests will be conducted in this study: compression testing, bending testing, and blast testing. In the compression testing, two different configurations will be used: a core with Al 5454-O material and a core with Al 5454-O material combined with AISI 1015 material in the middle of the core. The height will be varied at 75 mm, 100 mm, and 125 mm. Out of the six compression test samples conducted, the core with the highest strength will be used in the bending and blast testing. The compression testing results indicate that the core with Al 5454-O - AISI 1015 material at a height of 75 mm is the strongest, with a yield stress of 97 MPa, ultimate stress of 238 MPa, and compressive modulus of 55.5 GPa. In the bending testing, the maximum stress experienced by the sandwich panel is 489.5 MPa. In the blast testing, with an 8 kg TNT mass at a distance of 800 mm from the farthest skin position, the stress is concentrated at the center of the sandwich panel, causing oscillation. The maximum amplitude value is 12,200 G, while the largest displacement value is 2 mm.
