Abstract

The electrochemical reduction process to produce methanol is carried out using Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) as the reaction center. The Cu2O-ZnO/C catalyst was used to make various electrodes with the addition of a process control agent (PCA). The characterization results using the Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) method found that the particle size of the catalyst using methanol PCA has a greater value than n-hexane PCA, with an average value of 53.82 μm while the particle size of the catalyst with n-hexane PCA is 50. 0743 μm. The results of the Brauner Emmet Teller (BET) analysis found that for n-hexane PCA, the pore diameter value was 154 A, the pore volume was 0.521 cm3/g and the surface area was 135.073 m2/g , while for the methanol PCA the pore diameter value was 0.199 A, pore volume value of 56.8 cm3/g and surface area value of 140.513 m2/g. Based on the results of ECSA calculations and the results of SEM-EDX analysis, the best electrodes were found in electrodes with PCA methanol with a Cu content of 70.028 Wt% with an ECSA value of 0.15 m2/g. Based on the results of EIS calculations, the best electrode is the electrode with an n-hexane PCA of 16.36 S/cm. Based on the measurement results, the highest methanol content was found in MEA with a methanol PCA of 16.2% in conditions of a stack size of 10 × 10 cm with an electrolysis time of 2 hours.
