Abstract

Stunting or stunted growth of the body is one form of malnutrition characterized with height according to age below (<-2 SD) standard deviation by WHO 2005 reference. Based on the results of basic health research, there were 37.2% in Indonesia toddlers who had a stunting. It was known from the total percentage, 19.2% of children were short and 18.0% were very short. Stunting rates for toddlers aged 24-59 months in Palembang were the highest in the work area of Boom Baru Primary Health Center. The World Bank 2006 stated that the impact of stunting resulted in low intelligence and decreased physical capacity which caused to decrease in productivity, and a deceleration in economic growth. The purpose of study was to determine correlation between mother's characteristics and knowledge of 1000 first day of life actions with the stunting events on toddlers.This study used a cross sectional design. The sample of this study was the mothers who had toddlers aged 24-59 months numbered 60 people and used Simple Random Sampling technique. The results of the univariate analysis showed that stunting toddlers were 33,3%. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there were correlation between mothers’ education (p value = 0.003), family income (p value = 0.022), and mothers’ knowledge of 1000 HPK actions (p value = 0.021) but there were no correlation between mothers’ work (p value = 1,000), mothers’ parity (pvalue = 0,887), and mothers’ age at child’s birth (p value = 1,000), with stunting in toddlers. Stunting in toddlers was influenced by mothers’ education, family income and mother's knowledge of 1000 HPK actions. It is expected that all parties can make efforts to prevent stunting in toddlers by adding more insight during the child's golden period about what parents should do to prevent stunting before giving birth.
