Abstract

Human behaviour and environmental conditions had an important role in determining the health status of the community. Poor hygiene and sanitation had contributed to the increasing incidence of infectious diseases in Indonesia. Low nutritional intake coupled with infectious diseases was one of the factors causing stunting in toddlers. This study aimed to determine the relationship between hygiene behaviour and environmental sanitation with the incidence of stunting in toddlers. This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique uses proportional random sampling with research instruments in the form of questionnaires and observation sheets. The study population was all toddlers in the Jakabaring and Ilir Barat II sub-district, Palembang city, with 152 respondents. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between the mother's knowledge p-value was (0.047), the mother's hygiene actions p-value was (0.007), and the waste disposal facilities p-value was (0.038) with the incidence of stunting in toddlers in Jakabaring and Ilir Barat II sub-districts, Palembang City. The results of the multivariate analysis showed that maternal hygiene measures were the most influential risk factor for stunting with a p-value of 0.006 and a PR value of 2.989. Mothers with poor hygiene practices were 3 times more likely to have stunted children (95% CI: 1.359-6.575) than mothers with good hygiene practices after controlling for education and history of diarrhea. Therefore, it is needed for good hygiene habits and the management of environmental sanitation facilities to protect toddlers from infectious diseases that result in stunting.
